How to change Users icon on the Welcome screen ?(WinXP)

I will tell you how to customise or change the Users icon on the log on (or welcome screen).

Go to Start>Run and type 'nusrmgr.cpl' without commas, User accounts window will pop up as shown below:

Select the user account whose icon you want to change, now from the given options select 'change my picture' option as shown below:

Now select any picture from the given set or there is an option 'browse for more pictures' . Select the browse options if you want to put your on picture ( or your favourite one) as welcome screen as highlighted in the picture below:

NOTE: If you choose browse option to select picture for welcome screen icon , choose the picture having resolution 1:1 for example 120x120, 200x200 etc. so that it can occupy full icon space.

Tips to make your PC run faster (Win XP)

  1. Go to Start>Run and type 'sfc /scannow' without commas. Let Windows fix any errors.
  2. Go to Start>Run and type 'cleanmgr' wihtout commas, disk clean utility window will appear, then select the drive to be cleaned and press ok and repeat same step for other drives, this will flush your temporary internet folder, trash can, temp system files etc.
  3. Go to Start>Run and type 'dfrg.msc' without commas, disk defragmenter window will appear then select the drive to be defragmented and then press defragment tab to start defragmentation process. Repeat the same for other drives also. (NOTE: run this command after the above mentioned command for better result)
  4. If you are looking for best performance of your PC rather than appearance, then go to Start>Run and type 'sysdm.cpl' without commas , system properties window will appear, press the tab named 'Advanced' under performance menu press the tab 'Settings', Performance Options window will appear, press the tab 'Visual Effects' and choose ' Adjust for best performance' and press apply ok and again ok, its done.
  5. Go to Start>Run and type 'msconfig' wihtout commas , system configuration utility window will appear then press startup tab and only keep the programs that are essential to load in the tray icon (and hence stay resident in memory). Uncheck anything else non-essential, like an ATI or Nvidia control panel, Quicktime utility, Real Audio, etc. And then press apply tab and then ok tab. This will immensely help to boot the system faster.
  6. Upgrade drivers! Check for the latest BIOS, video, motherboard, sound, etc drivers from the manufacturers.
  7. Also use software like Glary Utilities (download from Internet) to get rid off folder and file duplicacy and to clean up registry.
NOTE: I Have listed the steps to start from run command , you can also perform most of these through control panel rather using run command, choice is yours, whatever you feel comfortable with.

One Click Shutdown (Window XP)

Right click on desktop select new and then select shortcut as shown in the following image:

"Create Shortcut wizard" will appear on the desktop as shown in the following picture:

In the highlighted text box (as shown in the above picture) copy paste-

%windir%\system32\shutdown.exe -s -t 3

and click next and name the shortcut as you like for example 'shut it', 'turn down', 'stop now' ( i have given the name OFF to that shortcut) and click finish. Now a shortcut is created on the desktop, double click that shortcut and PC will shutdown in 3 seconds.

You can also schedule PC shutdown, right click on the shutdown shortcut you created on the desktop, choose properties then choose shortcut tab as shown in the following picture:

then in the target text box change the numeral value 3 ( which represents shutdown time in seconds) highlighted in the above picture to the numeral value of your choice for example 3600 then press apply tab and then press ok , now if you double click the shutdown shortcut tab on the desktop then a countdown dialog box will appear representing PC shutdown after 3600 seconds that is 60 minutes.

And by the way if you accidently double click that shortcut tab (will schedule to shutdown your PC after the time scheduled by you), how will you cancel that scheduled shutdown task? Its simple press window key+ r key , run command window will appear on the start button in that window write cmd , then command prompt window will open , in that window write down
shutdown -a
and press enter , then scheduled task will be terminated.

Removing all icons from the desktop (Window XP users)

To get rid of junk icons on your desktop to be able to see desktop wallpaper and not have view of the wallpaper blocked by useless icons, one great way to win the never-ending desktop war is to just disable the desktop’s ability to show the icons and instead place the most common desktop icons, such as My Computer and the Recycle Bin, on the Quick Launch bar.Disabling the icons on the desktop is actually a very simple task.
To get started, just right-click Desktop. Then expand Arrange Icons By and select Show Desktop Icons to unselect it.
After a few seconds, the icons will disappear.Don’t worry, the icons and folder on your desktop were not deleted. If you ever want to turn the icons back on, just repeat the preceding steps once more. This is a very simple way to quickly clean up the desktop.
